We have been lucky enough to have two seniors from school come to work with Akeake students on Thursday lunchtimes and teach us some new football skills. We have practiced dribbling, passing, and shooting. Many thanks to Georgia and Luca!
This week we have been learning about geometry which is a fancy word for 2D and 3D shapes. We have been learning the names of shapes, and finding things in our world that are shaped like cones, cubes, pyramids and other 3D shapes. We have also been learning how to draw nets for shapes so that we can fold them up and make them. There are some cool songs on Youtube to help us learn about shapes. Check out the videos below! 2D Shapes Song 3D Shapes Song
Last week we had Maths Week. There were problem solving challenging for us to solve, maths activities at lunchtimes, and some other fun activities. We had a Buddy Class Scavenger Hunt on Friday afternoon. We had to measure and estimate a range of different objects and things around the school.
We were very lucky this week to have Tim from Canterbury Country Cricket come in and teach us some skills. We practiced throwing, catching, batting a fielding. One of our challenges was to throw the ball up high and see how many claps we could do before catching it. The record in Room 12 was 9! After practicing these skills we had a mini game with a batting team and a fielding team. We tried to keep score but we all got too many runs to count! At the end, Tim gave us all a bag with a foam ball and a poster to go on our bins at home. We have been having lots of fun playing with our balls (although some of them are already stuck on roofs and in trees at home).
We have been learning more about colours and blending this week.
Before we started with the colours, we had to make viewfinders and do some investigating. We took our viewfinders into the garden and had a look at the beautiful plants in our school. However, it is the middle of Winter so we had to go with Plan B - using pictures of flowers! Once we had chosen a section on the flower to use, we stuck on our viewfinder and sketched what we saw. We did a great job focusing just on what we could see in the picture.
We had to trace over the lines in vivid to make them stand out, then we used a mix of PVA glue and black paint to create some texture to our art. Then came the fun bit - pastels. We practiced blending colours on scrap paper first. Once we got the hang of it, we started on the real thing.
Room 7, 8 and 9 have started the term off with some exploration around how to blend with oil pastels. We will be creating some different art works over the next two weeks to show our learning and progression. It is great way to start our new inquiry topic. Keep an eye out!

End of term Jump Jam Competition
On the last day of term, KNS had a Jump Jam Competition.
Each hub entered a group of children to participate and perform in front of the whole school.
Akeake had two teams - Hub 7, 8, 9 and Hub 10, 11, 12.
It takes a lot of courage to get up on the stage in front of the whole school - and it was great to see so many of our children taking part and having fun! Both Hubs did an amazing job and made their teachers very proud. Well done to all involved
Hub 7, 8 & 9 doing a fantastic job dancing to 'Cant Hold Us'.
Hub 10, 11 & 12 being cool dude's to 'Uptown Funk'.
