Celebrating Matariki

Over the last two weeks we have been learning a lot about Matariki.
On Friday, the Akeake Team got together to share our learning, watch our yr 3/4 Kapahaka perform and to share some kai.
We had made some yummy star biscuit and we decorated them especially for Matariki.
We have had lots of fun with our new learning and we are looking forward to doing it again next year!

We got 2 star cookies each and we worked in groups to decorate them.

We carefully put icing and sprinkles on our stars.

And the we got to eat them.  They were delicious!

Matariki

Matariki is a Māori event that celebrates the start of a new year. We have been celebrating Matariki at KNS this week with a range of activities. The activities will run through next week and we are looking forward to a shared kai on Friday afternoon. Kōapa are especially proud of the stars that we have made and the display that we have in our space. We designed our own stars on black paper and decorated them with coloured paper. There are pictures of our busy hub making the stars below. We were even lucky enough to have Mr O back relieving in Room 8!

Finger Painting for the Kaiapoi Art Expo

We have been working hard in Akeake during Explore Time to get ready for the Kaiapoi Art Expo.
Those who chose to do Finger Painting, have created some amazing artworks!
Over three sessions we followed some steps to create our art.  We did a little bit each time and had to wait for the
paint to dry in between.  We got to choose between the 'Owl' and 'Jungle' to create.

Check out some of our amazing art that will be at the Kaiapoi Art Expo.

SPCA Visit

We had a very special visit from the SPCA last week. They taught us all about what the SPCA does, the most common animals they get (cats) and how we can support them by doing a good job of looking after our pets.

They brought along a furry, white friend with them. I wonder if you can tell what kind of animal it is.

Aboriginal Dot Art

Our Inquiry focus for this term is looking a community helpers like the police, ambulance workers, doctors, nurses and vets. We are also looking a bit further at different cultures around the world. As part of our immersion in Kōpapa East, we learnt about Aboriginal dot art and how a picture can tell a story. We traced around an animal, did our white dotted outline and then used earthy tones like brown, red, orange and yellow to create patterns in our animal. We think they look great!

Akeake @ the Art Gallery

This week all our classes visited the Art Gallery in Christchurch.
We travelled into town in cars with our awesome parent helpers and we got to look at all sorts of interesting things - including a bull made out of cans!

We saw some pretty amazing Artworks and had lots of fun squeezing whole classes into the Yellow Room.

We also had a lesson on Print Making where we made designs based on symbols that were important to us and our families. Once we had made our designs and pressed them into a piece of foam, we rolled ink over them and pressed them onto paper.  The results were pretty amazing and we learnt a new and cool way to make artworks.

We had such a great time visiting the Art Gallery and we would like to thank our awesome parents who helped us all to get there!
