Term 4 Inquiry - Sustainability

Akeake has been continuing our inquiry into sustainability. We opted into an activity and over 2 afternoons made our projects -

Some of our activities were making bee feeders,

making beeswax food wraps

as well as making paint and chalk.

Term 3 Inquiry - Sustainabilty

INQUIRY - Sustainability

Ewwwwwwwww - YUCK!
As part of our inquiry we collected rubbish from around the school. We took it back to class and tipped it all out to see what kinds of things we had found. There was A LOT of stuff that was plastic and single use items like glad wrap and chippie packets.

Our NEXT STEP will be to think about ways that this kind of rubbish effects our environment and to think of ways that WE can reduce this kind of rubbish and waste in our school environment.

Time, Continuity, Change

 Time, Continuity, Change

The children had a great time looking at some olden day items that Whaea Nicole brought into school.

They had to write on 'post-it' notes:
  1. What they could see
  2. What that thought it was
  3. What they wondered about the item

Science - What's the Matter?

Being scientists is a lot of fun.
This week Kōpapa East had a break out day.
We mixed, we heated and boiled ingredients.

In a pot mix 1/2 cup sugar
with 1/4 cup golden syrup.
Bring to the boil.
Add 2 tsp baking soda
Watch it fizz and foam. Turn it out.
And then we had to be patient and wait
and wait a bit more for things to cool.
Yummy hokey pokey
Then we went home and asked our mums
if we could make some more hokey pokey.

'What's the Matter?'
We are learning how substances have physical properties that can be described. When substances are mixed, heated or cooled chemical changes may occur.

In Room 7,8 and 9 we have explored the scientific process this week and performed experiments where solids, liquids and gases change their state.

We made jelly which changed from a solid to a liquid when we added hot water, then went back to a solid when it cooled.

We turned cream into butter by shaking it in a jar for a long time!

We hypothesised that sugar might explode when we add baking soda.  It didn't explode but it did fizz and bubble.  Hokey Pokey is delicious and fun to make!

Sun and Shadows

In Akeake we have been learning about space this term. We have been reading about different planets, writing about Uranus and even designing our own planets! In Kōpapa we learnt a bit about the sun. We know that the sun is a burning ball of gas, it is a star, it gives us light and heat, and it creates shadows on the ground. We did an experiment on the court to investigate our shadows. We discovered that our shadows change size depending on where the sun is in the sky.
