EXPLORE TIME in Akeake

Today we had our first Explore Time in Akeake.
Rooms 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 all got together and watched a video about using kind hands.  After that we got to choose from lots
of different options of fun things we could do for the afternoon.
We got to choose from art activities, building activities, outside fun, role playing with barbies and potato heads
and some of us chose to earn how to play chess!
We had such a fun afternoon learning and playing with different friends from across our whole team.

If any Akeake parents would like to come and share an activity with a group of children during our Explore Time on a Friday afternoon - we would
LOVE to have you!  Please contact your child's teacher if you would like to participate and come and have some fun with us.

Term 2 !!

Kōpapa East is ready for a very busy term 2.

There are so many things to look forward to this term and MainPower Sports is the first one.
Every fortnight, on a Thursday, two coaches teach us skills that will help us with different sports. This week we learnt how to dribble.

If you are free in the morning
we would love for you to pop by and support our learners with maths.

Science - What's the Matter?

Being scientists is a lot of fun.
This week Kōpapa East had a break out day.
We mixed, we heated and boiled ingredients.

In a pot mix 1/2 cup sugar
with 1/4 cup golden syrup.
Bring to the boil.
Add 2 tsp baking soda
Watch it fizz and foam. Turn it out.
And then we had to be patient and wait
and wait a bit more for things to cool.
Yummy hokey pokey
Then we went home and asked our mums
if we could make some more hokey pokey.

Paper Doll Project

This week in Akeake we have been working on Paper Dolls.
We have done this to show that we are all 'one people' and we all stand together.
We all made our own set of 3 dolls to send away with others from our school to the Paper Doll Project.  Children from all over New Zealand are making their own dolls to show kids of all different cultures together holding hands.  The Project is hoping to make the longest paper doll chain ever.  With the world record paper doll chain standing at over 4km long, that could be a challenge, but we think we can break that record when we all work together!
If you would like to see more about this project  - click on this link Paper Doll Project

Today we also observed 2 minutes silence at 1:32pm with the rest of the school.  We did this to join in with others around
the country to show our respect to all the victims of lasts weeks events.
Kia Kaha and Arohanui from us all.

'What's the Matter?'
We are learning how substances have physical properties that can be described. When substances are mixed, heated or cooled chemical changes may occur.

In Room 7,8 and 9 we have explored the scientific process this week and performed experiments where solids, liquids and gases change their state.

We made jelly which changed from a solid to a liquid when we added hot water, then went back to a solid when it cooled.

We turned cream into butter by shaking it in a jar for a long time!

We hypothesised that sugar might explode when we add baking soda.  It didn't explode but it did fizz and bubble.  Hokey Pokey is delicious and fun to make!

Akeake visit to the Kaiapoi Library

Over the last few weeks, Akeake classes have been taking turns visiting the Kaiapoi Library.
If we didn't have one already, we signed up for our own library card and we were able to get
some books out at our visit.

We really enjoyed listening to the Librarian - Jason.  He showed us heaps of cool stuff on the
Waimakariri Libraries webpage.
We learnt that if you click on the Kids and Youth tab, and then on KidsSpace, that there is lots of cool books we can read on there for free!

We got to listen to some stories.

We enjoyed reading some books.

We learnt how to issue our books with our new cards.

We loved our visits to the Library.  We are looking forward to going back another time.
